Martsang Kagyu Lama Chopa & Charity event

Martsang Kagyu Lama Chopa Puja

The word ‘Puja’ means reverence, honour, homage, adoration, and worship. Puja is expressed through the loving offering of light, flowers, and water or food to the divine.

Lama Chopa is a practice of guru devotion special to the Martsang Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. In Sanskrit, lama is guru, and chopa is offering, so Lama Chopa translates into English as “offering to the spiritual guide.”

This special Lama Chopa practice dedicated to Choje Marpa Sherab Yeshe (1134-1203) the founder of the Martsang Kagyu School, was originally compiled by Drogon Richen and has subsequently been reedited by His Holiness Gangri Karma Rinpoche.

Lama Chopa is considered to be an Anuttarayoga tantra or highest yoga tantra practice. As indicated by the opening words; ‘Arising within the sphere of great bliss, I manifest as a Guru Yidam’, it contains the idea of personal transformation through the practitioner merging his or her mind with the guru as the meditational deity. The essence of the practice is to see the guru as an enlightened being, a Buddha, and to receive his or her blessings in return.

This puja is also a celebration of Choje Marpa’s accomplishment in his Buddhist practice to achieve Buddhahood and become a Buddha in the pure land of Akshobhya Buddha.

At this time, we remember Choje Marpa’s achievement and follow his practice path. For us it shines like a beacon in the dark, guiding and encouraging us ever onwards on our own path to enlightenment in our Buddhist practice by dispelling any doubt or confusion, reaffirming that we too can achieve enlightenment.

God of Wealth Puja

To honour the God of Wealth may sound materialistic and counterintuitive to spiritual practice, but if done with the right motivation and good intention it becomes a meritorious act.  Any wealth we accumulate on a material level allows us to carry our Buddhist practice further through the practice of generosity towards others. It also provides the material support that enables us to practice and thereby through Buddhist study develop wisdom and bodhicitta for the benefit of all sentient beings.

This puja is normally considered a religious ceremony and one in which people can obtain and accumulate blessings.  By honoring the God of wealth, we can obtain and accumulate blessings and it is said the God of wealth takes over humans’ treasure, and that people who wish to obtain ‘treasure blessings’ from him can through Puja.
