Living and Dying: Journey of the Bardos

We encounter ‘death’ in daily life by way of impermanence: momentary endings and beginnings. Understanding this important Buddhist concept will help us relate in a healthy way to our time-bound lives, and give us a sense of ease when considering or approaching the end of life.

The Tibetan word ‘bardo’ means an intermediate state and refers particularly to the time between death and rebirth. The concept of Bardo was introduced by Shakyamuni Buddha 2,500 years ago when he taught the secret mantra. Today, the course is a meeting point between Buddhism and modern Western science, and gives the participant a fascinating insight into the philosophy of life & death in Tibetan Buddhism.

His Holiness the 12th Gangri Karma Rinpoche, the lineage holder of Martsang Kagyu Tibetan Buddhism, will explain death from a Tibetan Buddhism perspective, and from his own practice experience in assisting people in the Bardo journey. From this we will gain understanding as to how our view, altruistic intention, and actions influence the conditions needed to obtain a rebirth that favours self-liberation, and benefit those we love.

His Holiness will also instruct us in a traditional Tibetan Buddhist practice: a special channel meditation that prepares us for the after-death experience and develops familiarity with the bardo states, so that we may approach and experience our own inevitable death with less fear. These teachings literally bring light into the nature of mind and eliminate fear by illuminating it with wisdom.
